In every direction, there is a very low energy and very uniform radiation that we see filling the Universe. This has been called the 3 Degree Kelvin Background Radiation, or the Cosmic Background Radiation, or the Microwave Background. These names came about because this radiation is essentially a black body with temperature slightly less than 3 degrees Kelvin (about 2.76 K), which peaks in the microwave portion of the spectrum. This radiation - on a wavelength of 7.35 centimeters - is the strongest substantiation for the Big Bang Theory.
Turn on your radio, tune to a spot with no station and the static you hear is 3 degree background radiation. It is believed that this residual background noise is from the tremendous blast of radiation given off at the Big Bang.
Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson were both awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1978 for their separate discoveries of this phenomenon.
I love the new website. Nice work. Moves and looks better than the old one.
Thanks Julian,
Be sure to check back as we will continue to make updates and properly organize the old material to make way for posts from Jeremy so we can follow his most up-to-date work.
